Cycling
Cycling is an ideal way to explore Salt Spring island offering winding country roads, beautiful scenery and countless destinations within cycling distance. Cycling trips of varying challenge and duration are possible from afternoon excursions to overnight camping.
While it’s true that the roads are narrow making caution and courtesy a must while cycling Salt Spring, the pastoral scenery featuring interspersed artist studios with fields of gamboling sheep make the hills worthwhile.
For visitors without wheels, bicycles are rentable at Salt Spring Adventure Company, including some equipped with a peddle assisted electric system that allows for easy climbing of Salt Spring’s hills.
For visitors on wheels who need alternatives to get around while they’re on island, Salt Spring has a transit system allowing travel between ferry terminals and villages with your bike.
Local group Island Pathways has helped make the island more bike-friendly in recent years with installation of bike racks and development of their map with bike routes. Their Bicycle Working Group is charted to help make Salt Spring part of the Salish Sea Regional Trail System bringing a new level of cycling experience to tourists and locals alike. In the meantime, the island is well connected to the Lochside and Galloping Goose trail systems in the south and to Vancouver Island at Crofton from Vesuvius Bay for regional cycling tours.
