Literary Arts
Walk into local bookstore in Ganges, Salt Spring Books and you’ll find a whole section dedicated to local authors. For a rural community, Salt Spring Island enjoys the kind of busy, well-established literary scene you’d expect to find in a city.
There are well over a hundred professional writers living here – novelists, poets, scriptwriters, journalists, song-writers, non-fiction authors, many of them well known and internationally published, others perhaps less swell known, but working away and contributing to both the literary and wider community. The are also have editors, and publishers. In the fall and spring, there can be a book launch a week and plenty of interesting discussion. Fortunately, there are also many avid readers here.

Readings, frequent book launches and writer’s workshops by prominent authors are part of the ongoing literary scene on Salt Spring.
Local authors include Brian Brett, author of the book Trauma Farm, Nick Bantock of Griffin and Sabine fame, Arthur Black, Kathy Page, Kevin Patterson, George Sipos, Derek Lundy, Michael Ableman, Anthony Bruce, Robert Hilles and Peter Levitt.
