Nothing compares to the island’s famous self-guided Studio Tour for visitors who want a first hand glimpse into the inner sanctums of the talented people who live here. If you wonder what it would be like to live a quintessential Gulf Islands lifestyle then grab a free Studio Tour Map, get in your car and follow the little black sheep signs dotting roadways throughout the island.
Many of the vendors who participate in the Saturday Market open their workshops to visitors other days of the week. With 34 studios to choose from the options are varied.
Visit a serene lavender farm and sample their spa products. Watch artisans weave textile, throw pots or turn a piece Douglas fir into a beautiful wooden bowl. Run your hands over a thick sheepskin comforter or organic cotton duvet. Purchase an original piece of jewelry, sculpture or a painting. Along the way grab a snack at an artisan cheese farm, chocolate factory or home bakery and then wrap up the day with a picnic on the lawn of a picturesque winery.
Some of the studios offer a unique experience such as a workshop or demonstration. Artists may be present to answer questions about their work and help you understand the creative process and the Salt Spring way of life. Don’t be surprised if someone invites you for tea.
The free Studio Tour map outlines what each artist creates and the location of their studio so you can choose what you are most interested in. The Studio Tour maps are available at regional Tourism Information Centers including the one in Ganges Village, on the ferries serving the island, in marinas, hotels and B&Bs.
